Supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the project is aimed at strengthening the technological skills of journalists and community-based organisations to promote peacebuilding, accountability and good governance in conflict-affected areas.
The project employs multiple approaches to achieve its goal.
Training Workshop: Following an extensive skills audit of various newsrooms in the country, identified gaps influenced the training content for the workshop. The training brought together 15 journalists from 14 newsrooms across Nigeria for an intensive learning experience designed to deepen their reporting on conflict, peace, and security.
Structured as a 3-day in-person workshop, APSJ offered participants an opportunity to engage in field-tested lessons on:
Through interactive discussions, expert-led sessions, and peer learning, participants were equipped with the tools to responsibly cover sensitive topics, centre community voices, and hold power to account without escalating tensions or retraumatizing affected individuals.
Following the in-person session, participants were mandated to engage in 3 cardinal activities to reinforce learning, track impact and further disseminate knowledge:
Roundtable Discussions in Kaduna State: Owing to the history of the state with armed conflict, the project focused on spotlighting the efforts of local peacebuilders, and encouraging further collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
This project has served as a foundation for more intentional journalism that promotes accountability and supports social cohesion.
